I have always been intered in the point where one thing stops and another starts, where they overlap andhow one becomes the other. As a child I would spend time exploring how the hard, neat boarder of the lawn and the garden slowly became, on closer and closer inspection, a blurred transition, a metamorphosis.

Little Red Spiders I and II started life as a sample for dance performance in Amsterdam; Stevie, Andy, Joe and myself improvising our respective parts against the original basic track.
III and IV are based on simple graphic scores prepared specifically for the line-up, taking into account the strength and character of the musicians involved.

I wanted to make a recording that had a slow, organic rate of change. Unlike much of the music I have been making recently I wanted the music of The Little Red Spiders to be less stylistically referential, taking responsability for itself and dealing with metamorphosis and contrasting textures. The use of genre collage has interested me for sometime but I wanted this music to be autonomous, to be of itself. That is not to say that the music has no influences. I feel very strongly the influence of my collegues the Necks, Chris and Lloyd, and for a time I found myself drawn, specifically, to the drone music of Yoshi Wada, the iconoclastic textures of Penderecki, the slow trance of Swans, the dreamy groove of dub and triphop ... somehow these sounds have informed the music of The Little Red Spiders ... Yet I don't feel we are pitting them against one another ... I feel it is not referential music so much as a response to a need to be centred, organic, sensual ... In Andy, Stevie and Joe, in their sounds and approaches, I feel these qualities and I feel a strong affinity. Together I think we have made something of beauty and of some value perhaps...
