Notes
This is a compilation of three 7"s of songs created by Bobby Burg. It features Kevin Shea from Storm & Stress, Matt Clark from Joan of Arc and Pinebender, Steve Howard from Pinebender, and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn from Mirah. On this release he gets some help from friends, most notably Matt Clark on almost all of the tracks and Mirah for a duet towards the end. piano. bedroom. florida. is split into three 7”’s. The first 7” is driven by piano with swells of noise building and diminishing as the songs progress. The first two tracks are a bit slower, but the third track, It Feels Good to be Alive, is a bit faster paced and works itself into a good pop song.
The bedroom. 7” features delicate guitar work on both the acoustic and electric guitar. These songs are all slower paced and would be considered boring, except for the ability of Bobby Burg to draw the listened into songs with lyrics and simple melodies sung over simple instrumentation that add and subtract subtle layers. These are the weakest songs in the set, but provide a nice bridge to the third 7”
florida. contains two of the most interesting songs from this 7”. The first song Summer Somewhere Else has a full band sound with bass, guitar, and rock drumming (that can be very expressive). Presidents comes next and is the duet with Mirah. Matt Clark plays the Wurlitzer while Mirah and Bobby Burg sling random adult nursery-rhyme-like phrases back and forth. The song is short. It is a gem. The last song of the set Bill Burg is the most “arty” of the tracks. After an intro that sounds like a two-minute sound check the song works itself into an acoustic and piano number that is delicate and would be sweet if it wasn’t for the lyrics (ie. “I’m as afraid of sand in my shoes/as I am of you”).
