Notes

Suitte d'un goût étranger (Suite in an unfamiliar style) forms the second (33 pieces, numbered 55-87) of three parts of Marais' fourth (IV) book of pieces for viola da gamba ('Pièces à une et à trois violes'), published in 1717, when Marais was 61 years old. Many of these pieces were in keys rarely used for the viola da gamba: hence the 'unfamiliar' of the title. Marais explained: "I composed them in this way to exercise the skills of those who do not like easy pieces and who generally only have regard for pieces that are difficult to play".
