Sam (Lightnin') Hopkins
March 15, 1912 - January 30, 1982

One of the last great bluesmen is now gone. Lightnin' Hopkins' musical career spanned four decades with countless recordings to his credit.  This country blues singer, songwriter, guitarist has possibly been the single most influential artist on rock guitarists today. Spontaneous lyrics matched with highly imaginative guitar work described the Lightnin' Hopkins sound.

Born in Centerville, Texas he learned to play the guitar by the age of 10.  Soon after, he met the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson and became an accompanist for Texas Alexander. Texas was Blind Lemon's cousin and their association with Hopkins was a lasting one. Sam acquired the name "Lightnin" during a Los Angeles recording session with pianist Thunder Smith back in 1946.

The music on this album is a complete documentaion of a Lightnin' Hopkins recording session. Recorded August 6, 1969, the unedited tapes maintain all the dialogue and tune ups. Lightnin' Hopkins At His Natural Best is an important and historical recording and is a necessary addition to any blues collection.
