1. Time To Use. Get on with it, or so he says. Could be the Reaper talking. 2.Too Old For Sports. This is about being doomed and confused, and unfit. 3. Jam On The Fence. This was going to have vocals. The hook was “make love to the camera, can you do it all the time?” Maybe wisdom has prevailed for once. That’s Gurdjieff on harmonium, Mr-Fucking-Scruff on stuff, and somebody like Charley Patton or Skip James on guitar. Oh yeah and me on the Boss PC-2. Not a great song, but you have to hedge your bets sometimes. 4. Character Is Destiny. An imagined future as a rough old feller in a messy flat. 5. A Last Blast. Quitting yr scene, after one last glance. Tomorrow, possibly. When the tremors get really bad. 6. Another Orphan. I did this weird gig in Hitchin once. Then I came back and did this song, eventually. 7. Caught Myself Out. Sudden knowledge of the self. 8. Curse The Calm Before The Storm. This is a jokey song about the old ART problem. Sort of Tony Hancock vibe. My thanks to Lord Charles, of course. 9. A Drunk Revolution. An appeal for pisshead unity against the forces of evil. 10. (I Will Survive The) Darkness. I had planned to be the foremost East Anglian music celebrity before them ironic metallers came along. But this is about the actual darkness/blackness/horror. 11. Derelict Pipe. This is about being a pipe. Or some kind of ill-appreciated conduit anyway. 12. Itchy Feet. Dimitri reckons this is kraut. I like its hamfisted delicacy. 13. DVLA. This is not-learning-to-drive as a metaphor for having no drive. I finally sorted out getting another provisional and of course it came back with DVLA stamped all over my face, which was pretty funny. 14. Ghost. This is a Janus-faced song. There are a few where I try to be balanced. The (first) negative verse where I was battered is the shit, but the (straight) gee-up is awkward. 15. Midi-Monkey. This a sort of digital worksong for apes. 16. Human Heart System Check. This is a detached view of the tragedy of the self. 17. Hey Hollywood. This is my favourite Um song ever, even if it isn’t very good. It refers to the ambiguous relationship I have with the epicentre of the global entertainment industry. 18. Felix Kubin’s Shoes. Couldn’t get it together with the words with this. Groove is nice and fidgety though. Nothing to do with Felix except I nicked his drums. 19. Kansas. Helplessness and line-of-least resistance shit. 20. My Private Ridicule. I was singing this with my box at Strawberry Fair, walking away from the stage through the crowd. 21. Semo. Spooked electronics, as you can plainly hear. 22. Mr. Bump. Poor old Mr. Bump. I’m a proper cowboy, not like these would-be countrymen you see. 23. Revolutionary Trousers. This is grabbing your clothes where they fell and calling it revolting. Even if you were wearing a chicken suit. Even if you were an idiot. Note how choosing a slower tempo mysteriously makes for an epic Um song! 24. The Great Black Wing. Death. Ouch! Nah, it’s very light-hearted really. 25. People Hid In Jumpers. Burkhas, jumpers – it’s all just points on a scale to me. 26. When Yr Ten. When I was a little kid I used to have this strange idea that I was cursed with a great intellect. The only one who knew what was going on! Eventually it passed. 27. No-one Calls Me Anymore. More monomania. 28. The Perfect Disaster. It isn’t much, but it’s all I have. And it’s all mine. 29. An Indication Of The Tired Human Spirit. I had this idea that the perfect Beck lyric is: “…and everything sounds like a Beck lyric.” Of course he doesn’t get to use it, poor little fellow, but I do. I wish I could get him to sing that lyric and send it to me though. 30. Stop The War! Anti candle-burning song. Good for hangovers. 31. Where You Find It. Instrumental. Kind of a nodding-out song. I think the triumph of sleep should be celebrated. 32. We Don’t Let Giraffes In. The giraffe is not mute, as many believe. They simply do not get their say.
