Notes: Ian Wright, the England and Arsenal footballer, releases his first single next month. Do The Right Thing, produced and co-written by Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys, is in the shops from Monday August 16.
While it is still a novelty for footballers to make records, Do The Right Thing is not a novelty record. It is one of his Arsenal team-mates, Paul Merson, who was indirectly responsible for Ian Wright's recording debut. Knowing Wright's musical interests - he is even taking lessons on the tenor saxophone - Merson introduced him to a rabid Arsenal fan called Steve Kutner from M&G Records. They decided to cut a hardcore dance tune, far away from the usual footballing novelty record. Chris Lowe from the Pet Shop Boys (and, not entirely coincidentally, an Arsenal supporter) was approached to work on the project: he immediately accepted.
The result is Do The Right Thing, with lyrics by Ian Wright and Steve Kutner and music by Chris Lowe.
