Recorded live at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Celebration
Madison Square Garden
New York City, New York
14 May 1988
Original airdate: 11-13 November 1988
1988 pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
U.S. radio transcription discs housed in custom box set with cue sheet. Contains original commercial blocks and DJ introductions by Steve Downes. Features edited highlights of the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary Celebration. The original concert lasted almost 13 hours, and portions were broadcast live on HBO (Home Box Office), along with an FM stereo simulcast. (HBO commenced its live broadcast a few hours into the event and interspersed footage of the concert which had been taped earlier by the network. In so doing, some of the artists' sets were edited or omitted.) The audio was recorded by David Hewitt and Stanley Johnston on the Record Plant Black Truck. Only artists who had released material on the Atlantic label in the United States performed, with the artists spanning the 40 years of the company's existence. Some Atlantic signings, who had either officially split up or who had not performed together for a number of years, re-formed especially to perform at the concert. One such band was Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant and his (solo) band performed before the much anticipated Led Zeppelin reunion, but his section is placed after Zeppelin on this set. There had been plans to close the performance with a greatest hits all-star jam, but this idea was shelved and it was decided that Zeppelin would be the final act to perform. Also, during Foreigner's last song, I Want To Know What Love Is, they were joined on stage by numerous Atlantic artists who were present and performed that evening, including Phil Collins, Roberta Flack, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. These artists sang backing vocals as a choir on the song. Foreigner's lead singer, Lou Gramm, later said that he had no idea this was going to transpire, but he was delighted that it had.
